Steel and Non-Ferrous Metals Overview

Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA) has played a significant role in the revitalization of America's iron and steel business through our global trade in steel and ferrous raw materials. We have significantly expanded supply lines within the U.S. industry through the integration of our steel service centers and mini-mills and the financing of joint venture steel projects.

SCOA is one of the largest dealers in both carbon and specialty steel and we handle millions of tons of rolled steel products on a consistent basis. Our Rolled Steel department imports and exports a wide spectrum of steel products such as sheets, plates, bars, and shapes. SCOA is also a leading importer and supplier of tin products, used for specialty applications like cable wrap in the U.S. market.

Noted for the high quality of our products, SCOA began providing U.S. railroads with rail, track work and accessories over 20 years ago. In 1989, we established a joint venture with Yamato Kogyo of Japan called Arkansas Steel Associates, to manufacture steel tieplates. It has since become the leading supplier of this product in North America.

Furthermore, our supply base extends to aluminized products. In fact, SCOA is the leading distributor of aluminized products for one of the largest U.S. aluminized steel mills, Wheeling-Nisshin.

SCOA trades numerous ferrous raw materials worldwide, and is involved in financing U.S. coking coal exports for Brazilian Steel Industries. Recently, we made an equity investment in Steel Dynamics Inc. for the joint development of a new virgin iron project.
