Transportation Systems and Ship Building Overview
Sumitomo Corporation of America's (SCOA) Transportation Systems and Equipment department supplies complete state-of-the-art transportation systems and commuter rail cars and possesses the expertise to ship, install and build their component parts.
SCOA’s Ship Building department contracts with Japanese, Chinese and Korean companies to build and deliver cargo ships for U.S., Canadian and South American companies.
Transportation Systems
SCOA has more than 20 years of experience delivering and installing commuter rail cars in the United States. We can provide a variety of rail car designs to transportation authorities anywhere cost-effective solutions to today’s mass transit problems are needed.
Together with Nippon Sharyo, SCOA has delivered rail transit cars for Chicago’s METRA, the Northern Illinois Commuter Transportation District, the Maryland Mass Transit Administration, California CALTRANS Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board, the Los Angeles County MTA, and the New York City Transit Authority.
In 2002, SCOA and Nippon Sharyo, our partner and rail car manufacturer, celebrated their 20th anniversary of supplying commuter rail cars in the United States and in that time have supplied more than 450 cars. We are currently fulfilling a contract with Chicago Metra to provide 300 cars through 2005.
In addition, SCOA along with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries is building the Automated People Mover Systems at Miami International Airport’s North Terminal due to be finished in 2004. A similar system will also be delivered and installed at the Washington Dulles International Airport for 2008.
These state-of-the-art-systems, known as Crystal Movers, are presently operating in Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo and other locations. It is a pleasing, high-quality system with a solid record of efficient, safe operation in a wide range of environments.
Ship Building
In addition, in cooperation with Sumitomo Corporation (SC) in Tokyo, SCOA provides fully integrated and comprehensive services for contracting new ship building business. Our primary suppliers are Japanese ship builders, but we also work with ship builders in Korea and China.
Together with SC, SCOA has financed and chartered more than 15 ships for clients in North and South American countries.
We offer a wide range of vessels, such as oil tankers, bulk carriers, container ships and pure car carriers. We provide competitive and flexible financing for clients through bare boat charters, loans, or leasing arrangements. Through our worldwide network, we can also coordinate arrangements for second-hand ships and marine equipment.
