Sumitomo Corporation of America Foundation Contributes to a Broad Range of Causes

The Sumitomo Corporation of America Foundation is a philanthropic organization dedicated to providing financial support to a broad range of educational, cultural, research and community activities.

The Foundation's primary emphasis is funding research, educational initiatives and cultural programs which contribute to an enhanced understanding in the United States of Japan, its people, culture and society. Additional emphasis is placed on supporting local community, educational social services, and cultural institutions and activities which provide assistance, relief and educational outreach to those in need or otherwise provide for the overall well being and welfare of the community.

Since its establishment in late 2004, the Foundation has made contributions totaling up to $330,000 (as of 2/06) to a broad range of charitable causes which has included the Hurricane Katrina disaster relief effort and sponsorship of the Lincoln Center Modern Noh Plays.

The Foundation sponsored the 3 performances of the Modern Noh Plays which were part of a Lincoln Center Festival. The Plays were a double bill comprised of Sotoba komachi and Yorobishi and were both from a collection written by Yukio Mishima.

For the Modern Noh Plays, The Foundation donated $50,000 which continued the sponsorship from the prior year that celebrated the 150th anniversary of the U.S./Japan relationship.

Other notable contributions by the Foundation include funding support to Columbia Business School's Center on the Japanese Economy and Business and donations to the New York City Opera.
