Sumitomo Corporation Of America and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
America Awarded Systems Supplier Contract for Automated People Mover
at Airport in Atlanta
Sumitomo Corporation of America (SCOA) and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries
America (MHIA) together with Archer Western Contractors, Inc./Capital
Contracting Company, Inc., J.V. were selected by the City of Atlanta
to construct an Automated People Mover (APM) system at the Hartsfield-Jackson
Atlanta International Airport. The SCOA/MHIA team will be the systems
supplier and also will be responsible for the maintenance option.
The contract, valued at approximately $191 million, includes the
design, engineering and construction - including the elevated guideway
and maintenance and storage facility, systems integration, quality
control services, vehicle delivery, as well as operations and maintenance
of the new system. The new APM system will consist of Mitsubishi's
rubber wheel Crystal Mover vehicles that wil run on a 1.5 mile double-track,
elevated guide way, with three station stops: one at the existing
concourse at the airport, one at the convention center at the City
of College Park, and the last at the new Consolidated Rental Car
Facility (CONRAC). The completion date for the project is Fall of
2008.
The clean lines and unique diamond shape of the Crystal Mover make
it an aerodynamic work of art. It is a pleasing, high-quality system
with a solid record for efficient, safe operations in a wide range
of environments. The Crystal Mover's high-tech interiors provide
exceptional visibility and a smooth, comfortable ride.
In the United States, the team is currently working on building
and installing similar systems for the Mimai International North
Terminal and Washington Dulles International Airport.
