Foodstuff and Fertilizer OverviewWith activities focused primarily in trade, Sumitomo Corporation of America's (SCOA) Foodstuff and Fertilizer Division does business in such food products as grain, fertilizer, pork and beef. Annually, SCOA handles approximately 200,000 metric tons of U.S. corn, 500,000 metric tons of U.S. and Canadian wheat, and 400,000 metric tons of soybeans from the U.S. and Brazil, in addition to trading U.S. rice. SCOA sources and maintains supplies originating from around the globe, meeting Japan's strong demand for such imports as grains and oilseeds. Much of SCOA's fertilizer business involves American exports. We handle from 1 to 1.5 million tons per year of fertilizer throughout the world. While Japan, China, India, Australia and New Zealand are all major markets for fertilizer trade, SCOA has also been developing markets in Latin American countries like Brazil, Mexico, Argentina and Peru. These markets are highly suitable for fertilizer storing, blending and distribution. Besides traditional bulky products, SCOA also promotes overseas sales of U.S. products with value-added appeal. Environmentally-friendly products like Polyon, a controlled-release polymer coated fertilizer, and MagAmp®, a slow-release product for horticulture markets, appeal to environmentally-conscious overseas markets. Our coffee and sugar business continues to expand from its traditional role of handling coffee, sugar, cocoa, and tomato products in Central and South America and now cultivates new business in other foodstuffs, including cornstarch products.
