Receiving a Special Award for The Sumitomo Building and The Sumitomo Buildings No. 2 and No. 3 at the "Osaka Climate Action Awards"

Sumitomo Corporation received a special award at the "Osaka Climate Action Awards" for fiscal year 2021 in recognition of CO2 emissions reductions achieved at The Sumitomo Building and The Sumitomo Buildings No. 2 and No. 3 (all located in Chuo-ku, Osaka). In line with the "Osaka prefectural government's ordinance on the prevention of global warming", Sumitomo Corporation had submitted the emissions data of the buildings for the targeted period to the government, which bestowed the high rating based on the submitted results. The Sumitomo Building is co-owned by Sumitomo Corporation and Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank, while The Sumitomo Buildings No. 2 and No. 3 are wholly owned by Sumitomo Corporation. All of the buildings are managed by Sumisho Building Management, a Sumitomo Corporation Group company.

The Osaka prefectural government has been holding the "Osaka Stop Global Warming Awards" since fiscal 2007, and renewed them to the "Osaka Climate Action Awards" in fiscal year 2021 to honor and commend companies and their bases that have implemented excellent, exemplary initiatives to address climate change or to mitigate the heat island phenomenon.

Sumitomo Corporation received the award as a result of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions at the buildings by 17.1% for the targeted period from fiscal 2018 to 2020 (in terms of per-unit emissions and the reduction achieved for fiscal 2020 relative to the fiscal 2017 level). In response to winning the award, a spokesperson from the Company said, "We feel very glad that the daily efforts made by those related are being highly appreciated."

Sumitomo Corporation also began using green electricity at Otemachi PLACE (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), the location of its head office, and has been achieving zero emissions there since September 2021. Moreover, green electricity and CO2-free electricity, which is generated with no CO2 emissions, are respectively being used at Sumitomo Corporation Takebashi Building (Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo), where multiple business companies are located, and The Sumitomo Building, where the Company has its Kansai Office. Also, at other buildings owned by the Company, a range of environment-friendly measures are being implemented, including efforts to acquire certification for "CASBEE", which serves as an environmental performance indicator.

Sumitomo Corporation is upholding the mitigation of climate change as one of the six key social issues that it set in 2020 to enhance its sustainability management. The aforementioned CO2 emissions reduction measures will help to foster this goal. Going forward, Sumitomo Corporation will continue to implement measures to achieve its long-term goals, including "achieving carbon neutrality in the Sumitomo Corporation Group's business activities by 2050" and "realizing a sustainable energy cycle". The Company will thereby contribute to the solutions for climate change issues.
