Establishing Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship Program in the Sultanate of Oman

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo) and Sumitomo Corporation Middle East FZE (Head Office: Dubai, U.A.E; President: Masahiro Narikiyo) have launched, through the Sumitomo Corporation Muscat Liaison Office (office: Muscat, Oman; Representative: Kei Nakamura), the Sumitomo Corporation Scholarship Program in the Sultanate of Oman(hereinafter, “the Program”) to support Omani students studying at graduate schools in Japan. A ceremony to award the Program to two first-round recipients was held in Muscat prior to the start of their student life in Japan.

Developing the next generation of human resources as one of the focuses of its social contribution activities, Sumitomo Corporation has founded the Program to contribute to private-sector exchange between Japan and Oman and to the development of future leaders in Oman. For Sumitomo Corporation, Oman is an important market in the Middle East, and the country is keen to develop human resources and improve the level of education to support its departure from dependence on oil and gas.

Under the Program, Sumitomo Corporation Middle East will provide Omani students studying at Japanese  graduate schools with tuition and living expenses for two years plus round-trip travel expenses. Additionally, Sumitomo Corporation will support students in selecting a graduate school in Japan, taking entrance examinations and completing admission procedures to give enthusiastic students the opportunity to study in Japan.

It is hoped that Omani students who will study in Japan for two years will come to understand Japan through their studies and interactions with the local community, will nurture personal friendships, and will become lifelong bridges of international friendship between the two countries. The Program plans to support several students annually in the next fiscal year and onward.
