Sumitomo Corporation introduces Japanese culture in the United Arab Emirates

Sumitomo Corporation conducted activities to introduce traditional Japanese culture in three cities in the United Arab Emirates (Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, and Dubai) from February 17 to February 20, 2020. We have been implementing similar activities since 2015 with the aim of establishing good relationships between our overseas business bases and their local communities.

In Abu Dhabi, Sumitomo Corporation collaborated with the “Japan Day” event that was co-hosted at Zayed University by the Embassy of Japan in the U.A.E. and the university’s Japan Club for two days. The university has just established a Japanese language course. There are many students who have an interest in Japan and many of them visited our booth. In the zone for experiencing Japanese culture, such as wearing kimono, calligraphy, origami, furoshiki (traditional wrapping cloth), and kendama (cup-and-ball), our employees interacted with local students.

Events for introducing Japanese culture were also well received in Sharjah and Dubai. Sumitomo Corporation will strive to deepen mutual understanding beyond differences in culture and values not only in the United Arab Emirates but also in countries all over the world.

On the first day of the Japan Day event, H.E. Akihiko Nakajima, Japan’s ambassador to the U.A.E., attended the event and visited our booth.
In Sharjah, where Sumitomo Corporation is involved in the energy industry, we held the culture introduction event at the office of the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority. The Executive Chairman of the authority and many other staff members took advantage of the chance to experience traditional Japanese culture.
The calligraphy zone where participants tried writing their names in Japanese using a writing brush was very popular. It was surprisingly difficult to apply kanji to Arab names.
In Dubai, the culture introduction event was held at the building that houses our office. Some participants who attended after seeing the event information said they hadn’t realized that Sumitomo Corporation was a Japanese company.
Participants also enjoyed taking smartphone pictures of themselves dressed in a kimono.
