Energy Innovation Initiative

Overview

Through Sumitomo Corporation’s Energy Innovation Initiative, we are developing next generation energy and decarbonization businesses across Canada that contribute to the realization of a carbon neutral society.

By taking a customer focused and value chain wide perspective, we aim to create sustainable business models that address both environmental challenges and long term energy needs at a national scale.

Developing Carbon Free Energy

Across Canada, we are developing and supporting low carbon energy businesses, including hydrogen and ammonia, sustainable aviation fuel, biomethane, renweable diesel, RNG and other low carbon fuels.

These initiatives focus on building scalable supply chains, supporting industrial decarbonization, and enabling energy transition efforts by customers in multiple regions of Canada.

Expanding Power and Energy Services

We are exploring opportunities to expand power and energy services nationwide, including LNG, LPG, broader energy solutions, and integrated power and energy platform businesses.

Through these efforts, we aim to support grid stability, renewable energy integration, and the evolving power needs of Canadian communities and industries.

CO2 Capture, Storage and Utilization

In the area of carbon management, we are pursuing opportunities across Canada to create environmental value through CO2 capture, transport and storage related businesses, forestry and nature based solutions, and carbon value creation initiatives including BECCS and DACCS as Tech CDR.

By combining technology, natural assets and market mechanisms, we seek to contribute to meaningful emissions reduction and long term sustainability.

Collaboration and Partnerships in Canada

We actively collaborate with federal and provincial governments, industry partners, and local stakeholders across Canada to advance energy transition initiatives.

In Alberta, Sumitomo Corporation of Americas and Invest Alberta have signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate energy transition related activities. In parallel, we continue to explore opportunities and partnerships in other provinces to support Canada’s role as a leading hub for energy innovation and decarbonization.
