Sumitomo Corporation Power & Mobility Employees Implement SDGs-related Project

Employees of Sumitomo Corporation Power & Mobility Co., Ltd. (SCPM), a member of the Sumitomo Corporation Group, have set and implemented personal goals related to the SDGs (*). SCPM celebrated its 50th year in 2019 and the project was conducted to mark this milestone as an activity focusing on global issues. Under the project, individual employees chose one among the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, set their own personal goals to reflect their particular skills, experience, interests, etc., and worked on them for a year.

Employees were allowed to spend 10 percent of their working hours on this activity, and it accounted for 10 percent of their evaluation. In addition, by using available space at the company premises as well as via the intranet, individual employees’ activities were shared with the entire company, with other employees voting for those they thought were good by hitting the “Like!” button. In this way, the project made it possible for employees to show their support for each other’s activities.

Among the activities implemented by employees were goals related to their duties, such as the “spread of geothermal power generation,” as well as those related to their own life, such as “practice lifelong learning.” Activities conducted by employees covered all of the 17 SDGs, and the total number of times that employees implemented specific measures exceeded 400. “It is very meaningful for employees to play a role in solving various issues on their own initiative,” said a company employee.

In 2019, the year in which SCPM marked its 50th anniversary, the company name was changed from Sumisho Machinery Trade Corporation to Sumitomo Corporation Power & Mobility Co., Ltd. Under the corporate vision of “Committed professionals contributing to prosperous future of the globe through development of evolving mobility systems and social infrastructure,” SCPM is putting more effort into initiatives that focus on global issues.

Going forward, SCPM will scale up the personal activities to an organizational level, transform employee awareness into action in conducting our main business, and continue striving to achieve our corporate vision.
