Sumitomo Corporation and Switzerland's ABB Agree to Promote Decarbonization of Mining Equipment- First MoU for ABB in the mining equipment service provider business segment -
Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Shingo Ueno) and ABB Ltd. (Head Office: Zurich, Switzerland; President and Chief Executive Officer: Morten Wierod), a global technology leader and engineering company, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore joint solutions for decarbonizing mining equipment operations.

In response to the global trend toward decarbonization, the mining industry is facing an urgent need to address machinery and equipment that emit large amounts of greenhouse gases. Efforts to electrify entire sites and advance energy management are accelerating to achieve both operational efficiency and sustainability. This collaboration was realized based on the shared view that the alliance between Sumitomo Corporation and ABB will enable the two companies to complement each other's resources for decarbonization and electrification of mining equipment, and to respond more flexibly and effectively to the decarbonization initiatives promoted by mining companies. ABB has been contributing to decarbonization mainly through technological collaboration with other companies, but this collaboration is positioned as a new initiative to create a value through joint implementation at sites with Sumitomo Corporation as a comprehensive solution provider.
ABB supplies process plants and substation facilities at mining sites around the world, and is promoting full electrification of mining operations. Sumitomo Corporation's construction equipment business is engaged in the sale and servicing of large mining equipment globally, and has core strengths in service and support for the machines it supplies, including installation.
In their roles, ABB will be responsible for the development and supply of existing products and new electrification solutions, while Sumitomo Corporation will provide support for installation and after-sales service leveraging the strong relationships cultivated with customers to date. In the past, mining companies have introduced solutions by coordinating with multiple suppliers on a case-by-case basis, but this alliance will enable comprehensive proposals and support to promote smoother, more effective electrification and decarbonization in the mining sector.
For the time being, the alliance will focus on the trolley assist system that supplies power to mining haul trucks from overhead wires, alongside efforts to decarbonize the existing fleet. In the future, comprehensive solutions including energy management and infrastructure development for entire mining sites will also be introduced. Sumitomo Corporation and ABB will contribute to the decarbonization of the mining sector by leveraging their respective strengths to pursue economical solutions for mining customers.
Kenichi Hyuga, General Manager, Construction & Mining Systems SBU at Sumitomo Corporation, says, "We are looking forward to a high level of interaction and engagement on the topics of electrification and decarbonization, with the ambition to realize impactful solutions."
Joachim Braun, Division President, ABB Process Industries, also details, “Together with Sumitomo Corporation, we’re prepared to make further inroads in the challenge of decarbonizing heavy machinery in the mining industry. As a technology leader, we do not take this responsibility lightly and will investigate all options to drive effective change for leaner and cleaner operations. No organization can do this alone, and we share strong values and ideas with our new partner.”
Next steps include a complete feasibility assessment and review. ABB and Sumitomo Corporation will also collaborate closely to develop business models and methods of working to suit mining customers, including further connections with potential partners and go-to-market strategies.
