Sumitomo Corporation and Hitachi Rail Limited Win Order for Automatic Fare Collection System for MRT Jakarta's North-South Line- Introducing Indonesia’s first automatic fare gates supporting contactless credit card payments -

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Shingo Ueno) and Hitachi Rail Limited (Headquarters: London, UK; Group CEO: Giuseppe Marino), a Hitachi, Ltd. Group company engaged in the railway systems business, have received an order from MRT Jakarta (hereinafter "MRTJ"), a rail-based public transportation company owned by the Jakarta Provincial Government, to supply an Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North-South Line. Automatic fare gates supporting post-payment for travel via methods such as contactless credit card payments – a first for Indonesia – will be installed at a total of 20 stations along the MRT Jakarta North-South Line.

Indonesia has experienced rapid economic growth in recent years, and is expanding its public transportation system to address challenges including traffic congestion and air pollution caused by population concentration in the Greater Jakarta area. In line with the development of a modern urban railway system, MRT Jakarta continues to introduce innovative technologies to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency

The AFC system introduced through this project will improve the convenience of public transportation through the automatic fare gates and related systems that support postpaid payments via credit cards and QR codes. The system will also establish a new benchmark for digital fare collection in Indonesia's urban rail sector by enabling seamless, flexible, and future-ready payment experiences.

Sumitomo Corporation has contributed to infrastructure development in Indonesia, including the delivery of 96 subway cars for MRT Jakarta North-South Line Phase 1 – Indonesia’s first subway project – in April 2019, and the receipt of an order for 48 subway cars for MRT Jakarta North-South Line Phase 2A in October 2025. Under this contract, the company will supply a fare calculation and payment processing system for a total of 20 stations across Phases 1 and 2A. Additionally, for seven new stations planned for construction as part of Phase 2A, the company will supply, install and test ticket vending machines, automatic fare gates and related equipment.

This project has been positioned as a strategically important initiative for both the Japanese and Indonesian governments, with the Japanese government providing a yen loan through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) framework.

Sumitomo Corporation’s railway-related business began in the 1960s with export of railway wheels and axles manufactured in Japan to overseas markets. Since then, the company has expanded its operations to include the manufacture and sale of railway components, exports of rolling stock and railway construction (EPC) projects, primarily in Southeast Asia, the United States and East Asia. The company also has a long history and diverse track record in the railway sector, including participation in the Philippines’ first railway O&M (Operation and Maintenance) project in 2020.

Sumitomo Corporation will continue exploring opportunities to contribute to the development of Indonesia’s railway network and urban development along railway lines, including potential participation in MRTJ’s planned new East-West line project in Jakarta, which is being developed with funding support from the Japanese government.
