Sumitomo Corporation Signs Agreement with Osaka Prefectural Government and Osaka Business Development Agency to Support Osaka-based Companies Expanding into India
Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Shingo Ueno), together with Mahindra Industrial Park Chennai Limited (hereinafter "MIPC"), the operating company of Origins by Mahindra World City North Chennai (hereinafter "Origins Chennai Industrial Park"), located near Chennai in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, has signed an agreement (hereinafter "the Agreement") with the Osaka Prefectural Government and the Osaka Business Development Agency to support companies based in Osaka Prefecture expanding into India. Going forward, the four parties will work together to support Osaka-based companies in establishing business operations in India.

According to the World Bank's South Asia Economic Focus released in April 2025, India's real GDP growth for FY2025 is projected at 6.3%, with stable economic growth expected to continue. As the world's most populous market with over 1.4 billion people, India is also gaining prominence on the world stage as the leading voice of the Global South, drawing attention as a key destination for global companies, including Japanese firms.
Among Indian cities, Chennai in Tamil Nadu – where Origins Chennai Industrial Park is located – is especially attractive as a manufacturing and export base due to its proximity to an international port and convenient access to Southeast Asia. Recent years have seen increased investment in the region not only from auto parts and air conditioning manufacturers, but also in semiconductors and electronic devices, further raising Chennai's profile.
Since beginning operations in 2019, MIPC has been engaged in the sale and operation of the first phase of the Origins Chennai Industrial Park, which is now home to 16 manufacturers, including six Japanese companies. The park is located approximately 37 kilometers north of central Chennai along National Highway 16, providing access in one hour to both the city center and the international port. Tamil Nadu is one of India's leading manufacturing hubs, with a concentration of diverse industries, a large pool of workers with manufacturing experience and a strong presence of science and engineering universities. This provides a favorable environment for securing a skilled and diverse workforce.
In addition to these locational and human resources advantages, Sumitomo Corporation draws on its extensive experience in developing and operating industrial parks at 10 locations across six Asian countries to provide an operational environment that facilitates successful business for tenant companies. These strengths have earned high praise, and interest from companies continues to grow, with development of a second-phase pre-zoned area currently underway.
Sumitomo Corporation and the Osaka Prefectural Government previously collaborated on supporting the overseas expansion of Osaka-based companies through agreements related to the First Philippine Industrial Park and the Second and Third Thang Long Industrial Parks in Vietnam. Now, under the Agreement both parties will facilitate expansion into Tamil Nadu, India through consultations with interested companies and organized site visits. Further, both partners will flexibly provide information on expansion into other countries where they have prior support experience, in accordance with company needs.
Sumitomo Corporation will support manufacturing companies headquartered in Osaka Prefecture that are considering entry into India, while contributing to India's economic development and job creation in the region. This initiative also aims to further grow Sumitomo Corporation's overseas industrial park business, an area where the company maintains a strong competitive edge.

- Serving as a consultation point for Osaka-based companies exploring expansion into India
