Establish a New Position of Chief Digital Officer

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo) has established a new executive position of Chief Digital Officer (hereinafter, “CDO”) as of April 1, 2019.

Under its Medium-Term Management Plan 2020, Sumitomo Corporation will be promoting three growth strategies―increasing the value of existing businesses, creating the new next-generation businesses, and leveraging cross-business platform―and will be striving to accurately ascertain rapidly changing and diversifying market/customer needs for new value creation.

As the officer responsible for planning, preparing and promoting the company-wide digital strategy as key underpinning for Sumitomo Corporation’s growth strategies, the new CDO will lead the DX Center (Note), whose functions have been enhanced with the strategic allocation of human resources from the Sumitomo Corporation Group, in seeking to reform existing businesses by working hand-in-hand with the six Business Units and regional organizations all over the world to push ahead with company-wide digital transformation(DX), and to develop new businesses.

In promoting the company-wide digital strategy, efforts will extend beyond the Sumitomo Corporation Group in pursuit of open innovation with a wide range of outside partners. The MIRAI LAB PALLETTE opened today is part of this strategy and, as a “co-creation venue” that will bring together a wide variety of ideas that, through active verification and collaboration, will generate changes in business/service models across a variety of industries, it will help bring about the creation of new value.

(Note) The DX Center has been responsible for promoting company-wide digital transformation (DX) since April 2018.
