Tsuyoshi Yoneyama achieves first senior major victory at the Sumitomo Corporation Summit Cup 2018

The 57th PGA Senior Championship Sumitomo Corporation Summit Cup was held from October 4 to 7 of 2018 at the Summit Golf Club in Ishioka City, Ibaraki Prefecture. The annual four-day event is a major official tournament that determines Japan’s top senior pro. The PGA Senior Championship, first held in 1962, is the country’s oldest senior tour, and many senior pros aspire to compete in the event. Sumitomo Corporation has been the presenting sponsor of this event for six years since 2013.

The last day of the tour turned out to be unseasonably hot, but was nonetheless attended by a gallery of over 3,000 in total, and was helped by nearly 300 volunteers, some of them from the local community. Tsuyoshi Yoneyama, who had made a good start on the first day, went on to smoothly secure his first senior major title with a Summit Cup record-tying score of 21-under.

The tour’s “Exciting Fairway” event, which permitted gallery spectators to walk along the fairway of the first hole with the competing pros, and stalls selling local specialties of Ishioka City, proved very popular with gallery spectators. The Sumitomo Corporation Group worked hard to promote the event and make it lively, arranging the winning extra prize from Summit Air Service, and the eagle prize from SC Foods.

Please look forward to next year’s Sumitomo Corporation Summit Cup, a unique event where you can see the competition up-close while also enjoying yourself between rounds.
