Sumitomo Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and CEO: Shingo Ueno) will introduce the AI and data integration platform "Palantir Artificial Intelligence Platform (AIP)" provided by U.S.-based Palantir Technologies Inc. (Headquarters: Colorado, USA; CEO: Alexander Karp; hereinafter "Palantir"), in collaboration with its group company Ascend SC (Headquarters: Texas, USA; CEO: Michael Thomas), which handles consulting in supply chain management (hereinafter "SCM") and transformation (DX) fields. For this purpose, Sumitomo Corporation has entered into a license agreement for AIP with Palantir Technologies Japan KK (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Katz Ohara) through Ascend SC.
This initiative aims to advance SCM in the oil country tubular goods business and accelerates the DX of Sumitomo Corporation's globally deployed oil country tubular goods business in collaboration with SCSK Europe Ltd. (Headquarters: London, UK; Representative: Toshihiro Shibasaki; hereinafter "SCSK EU"), a group company.
Background of Introduction
For over 30 years, Sumitomo Corporation has been responsible for sales and SCM of oil country tubular goods used in oil and natural gas drilling around the world. The oil country tubular goods SCM business requires inventory holding and management tailored to diverse well specifications, and just-in-time delivery and service provision aligned with frequently changing drilling schedules. Therefore, it is a business that requires sophisticated judgment according to circumstances, and is characterized by operational complexity and high specialization. Sumitomo Corporation began pilot initiatives in 2025 at its European base to verify the effectiveness of AI utilization based on actual business data. As a result of consideration, we judged that Palantir's platform, which has strengths in integrating business data and building business logic and has already achieved results in the energy industry, aviation industry, and others, was optimal, leading to this introduction.
Content and Purpose of Initiative
In this initiative, utilizing various data related to inventory, ordering, processing, and billing that Sumitomo Corporation has accumulated over many years, along with Palantir's AI and data integration platform, we will help advance operations by introducing AI-based decision support in areas such as inventory optimization, processing plan optimization, and billing process efficiency improvement. We also aim to transform the business model in the industry by providing new value different from the past to energy companies, our customers. Leveraging Sumitomo Corporation's business knowledge and collaborating with digital-related organizations within the group such as Ascend SC and SCSK EU, we will promote optimal system design and improvement cycles. Currently, we are proceeding with platform design and development preparation, and plan to start introduction at European bases from fiscal year 2026. After introduction, we will progressively expand functions and make improvements while considering on-site operational conditions, and will also consider sequential deployment to other regions.
Sumitomo Corporation will work to accelerate the strengthening of business competitiveness and promotion of global DX across the entire group. By integrating with SCSK, whose complete subsidiarization we have announced, and fusing business knowledge with technical capabilities, we will realize new value creation in supply chains and global business transformation.
