Logistics and Insurance Businesses Supporting Global Business

Our logistics business, based on domestic and overseas operating companies including Sumisho Global Logistics (SGL) Group, has provided comprehensive logistics services such as transportation and storage. In addition to these, we are now also engaged in comprehensive infrastructure development businesses such as port operations and multifunctional logistics hubs, as well as initiatives like Smile Board Connect, which utilizes digital technology to improve warehouse operations. Through these efforts, we aim to contribute to solving social issues in the logistics field.

SGL develops comprehensive logistics businesses that globally support the businesses of companies both inside and outside the Sumitomo Corporation Group from a logistics perspective.

We operate advanced logistics centers that contribute to the sophistication and productivity improvement of a wide range of supply chains, from BtoC to BtoB. At our flagship Akanehama Logistics Center, we are also working to build new mechanisms that address corporate needs and social issues such as labor shortages, including the development of an automated logistics platform that can be shared by multiple companies.

We provide a wide range of international logistics services, including international multimodal transport, third-party logistics (3PL) that supports companies’ procurement functions, and comprehensive overseas logistics that support everything from factory relocation during overseas expansion to manufacturing and sales logistics after local operations begin. Through these services, we contribute to building robust supply chains for corporate activities.

We offer rental services for medium-sized foldable containers with inner bags, “MAXICON,” suitable for transporting and storing liquids, vegetables, powders, and more. These containers contribute to space-saving, labor-saving, and high hygiene at every stage from raw material procurement to production and distribution, as well as reducing environmental impact such as waste reduction, and are used in many manufacturing and agricultural sites.

The insurance business also supports the extensive activities of the Sumitomo Corporation Group. The business began in 1975 with its main objective to provide insurance solutions to cargo damage risks in relation to trading businesses, asset damage or liability risks at domestic group companies, and personal risk to group employees. Currently, the companies involved in these insurance businesses are Sumisho Insurance Corporation and SC Risk Solutions Co.,Ltd.

Sumisho Insurance Corporation mainly deals with the services described above and currently covers most of the domestic companies in the Sumitomo Corporation Group. Meanwhile, SC Risk Solutions Co.,Ltd is involved in reinsurance broking business for overseas projects including power plant, mining, and railways.

Additionally, Insurance business is actively involved in the optimization of risk costs and risk reduction through captive insurance facility, Bluewell Reinsurance Company, which is based in Bermuda in the North Atlantic. Furthermore, the access to international insurance market including Lloyd’s market is becoming increasingly relevant to respond to new exposure such as cyber or terrorism which are becoming more important in recent years.

Each day, the Sumitomo Corporation Group is expanding its businesses globally in various industrial fields. The insurance risk management functions are also constantly being enhanced and evolved to realize sustainable growth of our trading and investment businesses on a global basis.
