Rolling Stock Order Received for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North-South Line Phase 2A- Contributing to reduced traffic congestion and improved air quality in central Jakarta -
Sumitomo Corporation (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Shingo Ueno) and Nippon Sharyo, Ltd. (Headquarters: Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture; President: Mamoru Tanaka) have been awarded a contract by MRT Jakarta (MRTJ), a company funded by the Special Capital Region of Jakarta , for 48 subway cars for the Jakarta Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) North-South Line Phase 2A. The contract is valued at approximately 17 billion yen.
Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo previously delivered 96 subway cars for MRT North-South Line Phase 1, which began commercial operation in April 2019 as Indonesia's first subway. Based on the high evaluation of their achievements in Phase 1, the companies have now been awarded the contract for the Phase 2A train car delivery package.
In Indonesia where rapid economic growth has continued in recent years, traffic congestion and air pollution caused by population concentration in the Jakarta metropolitan area have become serious social issues. In response, the country has been expanding its public transportation systems. By extending subway transportation services under this project, the companies will contribute to easing congestion and improving convenience for residents in central Jakarta. Further, reduced use of automobiles and motorcycles is expected to help improve air quality.
For this project, the Government of Japan, through the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), is providing an Official Development Assistance (ODA) loan under the Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) scheme, making this a project of marked importance for both governments.
Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo have an extensive track record of supplying rolling stock in countries around the world, including Indonesia and Taiwan. Notably, in Indonesia, the two companies will have delivered a total of 144 subway cars for the MRT North-South Line when completed. Moving forward, MRTJ plans to construct a new line running east-west across Jakarta with funding support from the Government of Japan, and numerous projects to establish new railway networks in other cities across Indonesia are also being planned. Sumitomo Corporation and Nippon Sharyo will continue to explore potential opportunities to support the development of the country’s railway network.
