Introducing SAP® SuccessFactors as Core HR/Payroll System

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chuo-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Kuniharu Nakamura) has decided to introduce SAP® SuccessFactors, a cloud solution provided by SAP Japan Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Yuzuru Fukuda; hereinafter, “SAP Japan”), as its core Human Resources system for personnel management and payroll calculation. Sumitomo Corporation will be the first company in Japan to adopt SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll, a payroll module offered as a function of SAP® SuccessFactors. The business process re-engineering (BPR)1 and system integration tasks preceding the introduction will be jointly undertaken by SCSK Corporation (Head Office: Koto-ku, Tokyo; President: Tooru Tanihara; hereinafter, “SCSK”) and ABeam Consulting Ltd. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President and Chief Executive Officer: Toshinori Iwasawa; hereinafter, “ABeam Consulting”).

SAP SuccessFactors is SAP’s cloud-based solution for comprehensively supporting users’ HR management covering personnel affairs and talent management. Featuring robust security, expandability and flexibility, the solution can be promptly adapted to the distinctive requirements and regulatory amendments existing in 81 countries around the world, which has led to the accumulation of an extensive track record worldwide including in Japan. SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll, which is a primary function of SAP SuccessFactors, provides all-encompassing support in payroll calculations by exhaustively accommodating Japan’s unique legal requirements and work processes.

In HR system integration, many corporations are struggling to cope with the increasing operational complexity brought about by add-on developments2 that have resulted in bloated systems, as well as their rising related costs. SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll to be adopted by Sumitomo Corporation allows simple and accurate payroll calculation, reducing the time and costs required for the task.

Today, businesses are stepping up their moves to capitalize on artificial intelligence (AI), big data analysis and other advanced technologies to enhance their efficiency and quality of HR management including personnel recruitment, development, assessment and assignment as well as payroll calculation. Robotic process automation (RPA), or using robots to automate operations, is also becoming a trend. By leveraging SAP SuccessFactors Employee Central Payroll and its capability to incorporate AI tools, Sumitomo Corporation will also aim at becoming one of the early adopters of HR technology3 and RPA.

Under this project, SCSK and ABeam Consulting will take charge of BPR and system integration. SCSK has provided Sumitomo Corporation with maintenance/operation services for its payroll system and is versed in the relevant workflow. ABeam Consulting, which is equipped with the extensive expertise and insight needed for adopting SAP SuccessFactors, provides total consulting support for the entire process, from project launch to post-introduction follow-up service. With SCSK and ABeam Consulting collaborating as project partners, coherent and efficient project management from BPR to system introduction can be achieved.

The new system is scheduled to commence operations in July 2020, with future plans also underway for globally integrating the Sumitomo Corporation Group’s SAP SuccessFactors to execute HR strategy on a global basis.

1. BPR : Fundamentally reviewing existing organizations and operations to redesign tasks, workflows, management structures, information systems and others
2. Add-on development : Development undertaken by businesses adopting an enterprise resources planning (ERP) package in order to add functions it lacks
3. HR technology : Advanced IT technology used to process HR-related tasks including personnel recruitment, development, assessment, assignment and others
