SC Alumni Network Established and 1st General Meeting Held

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo) has established the SC Alumni Network (see note) for former Sumitomo Corporation employees, and the SC Alumni Network held its first general meeting on Monday, September 30.

Recent years have seen the rise of businesses responding to new consumer needs, primarily IT companies and start-ups, and business model changes spurred on by digital transformation (DX) as well as the creation of synergy through inter-business cooperation have been accelerated. Such innovations are no longer generated by a single company on its own, but instead now emerge from various connections that transcend the barriers between organizations, corporations, industry sectors, countries and regions. The SC Alumni Network was recently launched as a platform for creating new value from personal ties between individuals.

At the SC Alumni Network’s 1st General Meeting, held at the MIRAI LAB PALETTE Open Innovation Laboratory, participants were updated on developments at the company, including the Sumitomo Corporation Group’s DX efforts and collaboration between business units. An informal get-together for alumni and active employees was arranged at the Head Office for about 250 participants (approximately 100 alumni and 150 active personnel). Events other than annual general meetings are also being planned to give alumni more opportunities to interact with active employees.

Sumitomo Corporation believes that exchange between alumni engaged in various capacities outside the company and its active employees will lead to new business opportunities through the fusion of knowledge and personal contacts inside and outside the company. Another aim in supporting exchange among alumni as well as between alumni and other persons outside the company is to establish a more open corporate culture.

(Note) Alumni
The term “alumni” usually refers to the graduates of a particular university, but in recent years it has come to be used to describe persons who have resigned/retired from a particular company.
