CSR in Asia & Oceania

Our CSR

We believe success is achieved not only through business but also by the positive role we play in society. That’s why we work passionately with our stakeholders to tackle the world’s complex economic, environmental and social challenges, and of course, changing expectations.

Throughout our history, “integrity and sound management” has been the underlying principle shaping the way we do business. Conducting responsible business is a culture deeply entrenched in our organisation. It is not just a behavior expected from all employees but an earned reputation built on trust.

In fulfilling our role as a good corporate citizen, we are also guided by international codes of conduct for sustainable management. In March 2009, Sumitomo Corporation Group became a signatory company of the UN Global Compact in support for its 10 universally accepted principles on human rights, labour standards, environment, and anti-corruption. In November 2009, Sumitomo Corporation Group further established the CSR Action Guidelines for Supply Chain Management in an effort to contribute to sustainable supply chains together with our suppliers and business partners. Amongst other CSR initiatives, Sumitomo Corporation Asia & Oceania Pte. Ltd. sets out steps that it has taken to ensure modern slavery and human trafficking are not taking place in its business or supply chains. The statement has been approved by its board of directors.

Wherever we operate, we act in strict compliance with laws and regulations. Whatever business we do, we strive to drive progress and enrich lives today and tomorrow. These are our group-wide concerted efforts toward supporting sustainable development in the communities and environment in which we operate.

Principles

The Corporate Mission Statement of Sumitomo Corporation Group is testament to the importance we place on conducting responsible business. It is a redefinition of the original Sumitomo Business Philosophy which has been steadfast for more than 400 years – a legacy we are proud of and the value standard by which we operate.

A credo of the philosophy says, “Benefit for self and others, private and public interests are one and the same.” This means that “Sumitomo’s business activities must benefit not only Sumitomo’s own businesses, but also society and the nation.” This philosophy of mutual benefit laid the foundation for Sumitomo Corporation Group’s management principles, which include our corporate vision “We aim to be a global organization that constantly stays a step ahead in dealing with change, creates new value, and contributes broadly to society” and corporate mission “To achieve prosperity and realize dreams through sound business activities.”

For us, promoting corporate social responsibility (CSR) means conducting responsible business activities based on our management principles and contributing to the sustainable growth of society. We work on social issues through sound business practices and social contribution initiatives.

We are committed to making a positive impact on the communities and environment in which we operate and will continue to explore innovative ways to raise the standards of our CSR practices.
