Pilot project launched for consumer-use personal data management tool

Sumitomo Corporation (Head Office: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Representative Director, President and Chief Executive Officer: Masayuki Hyodo) has launched a pilot project for “iscream,” a consumer-use personal data management/utilization tool. The project involves commercializing the new proposal selected from among applications for the 0→1 Challenge 2018 intrapreneurship program.

Recently, amid mounting concerns over the leakage and abuse of customer information by corporations, national and regional governments around the world have begun to establish frameworks to protect personal information. Major examples include the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which took effect in 2018, and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA), enacted in the same year. Also, in Japan, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications has led domestic privacy protection initiatives by initiating an information bank (Note 1) certification system.

“iscream” is a mobile personal data store which enable consumers to manage their personal information safely by themselves instead of entrusting it to a third party, and employ services provided to utilize the information. A total of 500 participants were invited from in and outside of the Sumitomo Corporation Group to use the developed app to manage information related to fashion, which was an area specified for this purpose, registering height, weight, age, gender, apparel purchase history and other personal data, and utilizing it to receive specialist advice from fashion influencers and retail salespersons. The plan is scheduled for two months to verify this service model with a focus on users’ hesitation concerning self-management and third-party provision of personal information as well as user needs.

In conjunction with the pilot project, a number of related plans are being considered, including building blockchain-based systems for information security and authorization control necessary for commercialization, and expanding the project to other areas associated with healthcare, education, identification and others.

The 0→1 Challenge program was launched in 2018 to provide an opportunity for individual employees to propose new businesses, irrespective of position and department, aiming to accelerate efforts to create next-generation businesses. With systems designed in partnership with external startup accelerators, the intrapreneurship initiative places particular emphasis on independent evaluations and the applicant’s capability for implementation. The 0→1 Challenge 2019 program has received many applications, which are currently under the screening process.

Sumitomo Corporation respects each employee’s potential and aspirations and supports their fulfillment. Pursuing partnerships with various networks in response to major changes in society, we will promote corporate-wide business model reforms in order to create new value.
