Showcasing Bird Friendly® Coffee on International Day for Biological Diversity 2017

On May 21, 2017, Bird Friendly® Coffee (dealt with by SC Foods Co., Ltd.) was showcased at the International Day for Biological Diversity 2017 event hosted by the Japan Committee for International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN-J).

Held at Osaka Tennoji Zoo in Osaka Prefecture, the event attracted 175 people, of whom 63 were children. There was a presentation on biodiversity given on display boards, a talk show, a quiz competition and storybook reading. The visitors enjoyed the event while sampling a free cup of Bird Friendly® Coffee.

The quiz competition after the talk show saw heated matches for prizes among adult coffee lovers and children, many of whom successfully answered challenging questions. The two-hour event won support for the Bird Friendly® Coffee program from many visitors, who crowded the Ogawa Coffee booth at the venue to buy the coffee.

Bird Friendly® Coffee is organic and grown with due consideration for the protection of forests where migratory birds rest. Currently, 27 coffee farms and farm organizations in 12 countries are certified as Bird Friendly® under the certification criteria set by the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center. A portion of the revenue is used for research, investigation and protection activities for migratory birds.

To support the program, Sumitomo Corporation started importing Bird Friendly® Coffee in 2004 (currently imported by its subsidiary, SC Foods). In the following year, distribution of the coffee began through Ogawa Coffee in Japan. Marking the 14th year of sales in Japan this February, SC Foods made the Double 20 (Nijumaru) Declaration.(*) Upholding the concept of contributing to biodiversity through a single cup of coffee, the company will continue contributing to biodiversity conservation.

*Double 20 (Nijumaru) Declaration:
At the tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity held in Nagoya in October 2010 (COP 10), the Aichi Biodiversity Targets were adopted with the aim of halting biodiversity loss. The Double 20 Declaration is voluntary commitment and good example for implementation of Aichi Biodiversity Targets, collected by IUCN-J.
