Non-Ferrous Products & Metals

Investing and Trading in Aluminium

Bauxite is one of the most abundant base minerals in Australia, and thus being the foundation for producing aluminium. Aluminium is a metal that has characteristics of being durable, malleable and lightweight. With its great versatility, aluminium is a vital metal for a modern society.

Aluminium is highly sought after in industries where strength and lightweight products are required, such as aerospace, transportation, construction, packaging and many others. Sumitomo Australia has been committed to aluminium industry in Australia since 1994. This includes an investment in an Aluminium Smelter in Central Queensland, trading aluminium ingots and supplying aluminium rolled/sheet products.

Import

Sumitomo Australia is able to source and supply some of the highest grades of aluminium, matched perfectly with your purpose in mind. Our long-term commitment to the Australian market has seen growth in in a number of key markets. They are:-

  • Aluminium rolled coil & sheet – supply to beverage can and wine closure manufacturers
  • Titanium powder & sponge – specialised industries

Export

Utilising our global reach and footprint in most countries, Sumitomo Australia can connect both buyers and sellers of non-ferrous goods. We have a particular expertise exists in primary aluminium ingots – Rolling & Extrusion mills in Japan & Asia for various industries

Direct Investment

Sumitomo Australia and Sumitomo Corporation jointly hold an interest in Boyne Smelters Limited (BSL) and the Gladstone Power Station (GPS). BSL is Australia’s largest aluminium smelter and operated by Pacific Aluminium - a Rio Tinto Alcan (RTA) owned entity. The smelter produces over half a million tonnes of aluminium each year. Its production activities include manufacturing of carbon anodes, aluminium production (smelting) in the reduction lines, and casting of molten metal into aluminium ingots and billets.

Sustainable Metal: Recycling Aluminium

Aluminium can be recycled and reborn infinitely. The aluminium recycling process requires only 5% of the energy used to create aluminium from bare metal and emits only approximately 5% of the greenhouse gases. The world is now tackling aluminium recycling as a global issue. Thus, the recycling rates of aluminium have increased all over the world. Sumitomo Australia utilises its global network and supplies eco-friendly aluminium products to the Oceania Region.
Our Rolled Aluminium coils are manufactured in Japan, then imported into Australia by Sumitomo Australia, are made from 60-70% of recycled aluminium products.
