Today we spoke with Riki Yoshida, General Manager of the Office Business Division and one of the company’s founding members, along with employees Makiko Tominaga and Employee Y, about the evolving scope of Sumisho Well Support’s operations, the unique sense of fulfilment that comes from being part of the Sumitomo Corporation Group and the kind of support that promotes personal growth.

Becoming an "Ordinary Company" as Our Goal: 12 years of Sumisho Well Support
To begin, please tell us about the background behind the establishment of Sumisho Well Support.
YoshidaSumisho Well Support was established in 2014 with the aim of creating a place where employees with disabilities can thrive with expanded employment opportunities. Our mission is to handle work on behalf of Sumitomo Corporation Group companies and contribute to the business as a reliable force. The word "Well" in our company name embodies our desire to become a valuable support partner for the Sumitomo Corporation Group.
What specific kinds of work does Sumisho Well Support carry out?
YoshidaWe are responsible for supporting the operational infrastructure of the Sumitomo Corporation Group. At the time of its establishment, the company’s main activities centered on light duties such as wastepaper collection, shredding and mail preparation, and basic office tasks like business card production. However, with the rapid shift to paperless operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, the company changed course toward new services in the digital domain. Subsequently, the company launched operations with a copy/print center, mail center and massage room. In FY2024, we also opened an Osaka sales office, steadily expanding our range of services.
You have been involved with Sumisho Well Support since its founding. What kind of vision did you have at the beginning?
YoshidaOur goal was to become a company that people would call "ordinary." When people think of employing individuals with disabilities, they often imagine giving them only simple tasks. However, this approach doesn't really contribute to the growth of employees, or the company. For the first five years, we focused on increasing the employment rate to lay a foundation for the company. Since then, we have actively taken on work considered difficult – for example, financial data input involving specialized and confidential information.
However, this doesn't mean that we can suddenly handle highly advanced tasks. In the early days, we would break work down into detailed steps – for example, telling clients, "If you prepare the work up to this point, our employees can handle the rest" – and redesign roles and check systems accordingly to make things work. I feel that the idea of "If there isn't a precedent, we will find a way" – as opposed to "Without precedent so far, it can't be done" – has become deeply rooted in Sumisho Well Support’s culture.
Further, the Sumitomo Corporation Group has a culture that positively embraces proposals with the spirit of "Let’s just try it first" and that entrusts people with responsibility. While thoroughly discussing risks, we welcome challenges and take action on them. I feel that this environment played an important role in shaping Sumisho Well Support’s culture.
Graphic Design and App Development: Supporting the Group Through Work Found at SWS
Next, I’d like to ask Tominaga and Employee Y some questions as well. Why did both of you choose to work at Sumisho Well Support?
Tominaga I chose the company based on whether I could envision myself working here long term. After gaining experience at other special subsidiaries, I found that they emphasized special support to provide certain kinds of assistance. But with Sumisho Well Support, I felt it was an "ordinary company" in the best possible way. I knew this was the place for me because they offered the necessary accommodations, while genuinely valuing one-on-one communication and individualized support.
Employee Y I was looking for work based on several key factors. These included whether the company had a track record of hiring people with mental or developmental disabilities, whether they made reasonable accommodations in general, their history of promoting employees to regular full-time positions, and whether I would be able to take on a role that capitalized on my own strengths. I was particularly attracted to the fact that, while many jobs for people with mental and developmental disabilities are non-regular, Sumisho Well Support offers the opportunity for regular full-time employment after joining.
Please tell us about the work you are currently responsible for.
TominagaI handle business improvement and automation development using Microsoft Power Platform* in response to requests from within the company and the Sumitomo Corporation Group. For example, we automate tasks (such as manually entering PDF content), visualize Excel data through apps and graphs and build systems that reduce workloads on site. In application development work, I feel a great sense of accomplishment when tackling difficult tasks and succeeding.
*Power Platform is the collective term for low-code/no-code development platforms provided by Microsoft and is a set of tools that enables users with no specialized programming knowledge to rapidly and cost-effectively develop business applications (Power Apps), automate operations (Power Automate), analyze data (Power BI) and build websites (Power Pages) through intuitive interfaces, supporting digital transformation (DX) promotion and greater business efficiency.
Employee YI am primarily responsible for graphic design, using Illustrator and Photoshop to create greeting cards and calendar designs. I am also responsible for floor concierge duties and other general tasks, such as entering financial data and sorting mail at group offices.
One of the most memorable projects was the production of New Year e-greeting cards used within the Sumitomo Corporation Group. When they were sent out, I felt great joy knowing something I created had reached so many.
What kind of working arrangements do you both have now?
TominagaLast year, while taking on new duties and training employees, my health deteriorated. I am now working from home two days a week as a special exception. In retrospect, I believe that the reason why my health deteriorated was that I had taken on too much work. I have become more conscious of not pushing myself too hard. I now continue working steadily without having to take a leave of absence, because the company provides an environment that allows me to easily consult with them.
Employee YBasically, my regular schedule is five days a week, with 6.5-hour on-site shifts each day, but I also work from home once a week to manage my health, after consulting with the company. We have a supportive environment, where everyone naturally helps out during sudden absences or when workloads pile up, which gives me a strong sense of security.
What have you gained by working as a member of the Sumitomo Corporation Group, and what changes have you experienced in your way of thinking?
Employee YMany special subsidiaries are separate from their parent companies, but Sumisho Well Support is in the same building as Sumitomo Corporation's head office. Whenever I visit other floors, I can feel how the company is sustained by the cooperation of so many people. When I see my creations displayed on elevator signage, I feel happy knowing that I am contributing as a member of the Group.
TominagaWhen I work in the same building as Sumitomo Corporation Group members and eat in the cafeteria with them, the scale of our organization really hits home. I feel like our work is really making a difference, and this makes me happy.
Business and Environmental Design That Asks: "How Can We Maximize Everyone's Potential?"
I understand that Sumisho Well Support views disability characteristics as strengths.
YoshidaWe value creating conditions that allow each person to bring their abilities to their work. Rather than differences in inherent ability, the prerequisites for performing well differ from person to person. To this end, we believe that, with thoughtful job design and operational ingenuity, disability characteristics can become strengths.
For example, some people perform with greater precision in a consistent routine than in a rapidly changing environment, while others can maintain deeper concentration once the right conditions are in place. I don't think that's particularly unique – we are all simply different. This is why we design jobs and work environments from the perspective of "What conditions will enable this person to perform at their best?" rather than "What are they not suited for?"
We also focus on the nature of the support that we provide. I tell our dedicated staff members: "Don’t provide too much support before problems occur," as excessive support can sometimes hinder personal growth. The prerequisites for demonstrating one’s abilities are unique to each individual – if there are 100 people, there are 100 different sets of conditions. Based on these differences, each individual can tackle work at their own pace, which contributes to the overall strength of the team. This is our approach to support.
Expanding Possibilities at Your Own Pace: Where Everyone Can Take On Challenges With Confidence
Finally, what do you think is the appeal of working at Sumisho Well Support?
Employee YFor those seeking stable work, I believe that the track record of promotion to regular full-time employment and our office environment are major attractions. It's also reassuring that, while working there you can build your career in a way that suits you.
TominagaAs I mentioned earlier, I think that Sumisho Well Support engages with each individual and works with them to create an environment that suits their needs, rather than emphasizing specific systems or structures. It's especially well suited for people who need to adjust their working style through consultation with dedicated in-house staff.
YoshidaWe value enabling each person to "play to their strengths" regardless of level of ability. The phrase "play to their strengths" may sound like a high bar, but once the foundation is in place for a person to demonstrate their abilities, growth will naturally follow. Many people first join the company looking for stable employment, then gradually gain confidence and step forward to take on new challenges.
We have created an environment where each person can grow at their own pace, so we hope that anyone interested will feel confident to apply.
