Sumisho Hands-on Internship Behind the Scenes: Experiencing "Real Work" Through Retail Data Marketing in the Field
Beginning in FY2024, Sumitomo Corporation launched Sumisho Hands-on Internship, an on-the job internship program designed to help students experience Sumitomo Corporation's corporate culture and workplace environment firsthand, while also giving them a taste of what it's like to work at an integrated trading and business investment company. Among major integrated trading companies, Sumitomo Corporation is currently the only one to offer this type of on-the-job internship program (as of December, 2025). Now in its second year, the FY2025 program brought approximately 60 students into 19 different organizations across the Group. For part of their eight-day program, an Enriching+ editorial team member accompanied three students who joined the Retail SBU, Retail Business Data Marketing Unit's Retail Data Science Team for a behind-the-scenes look at five days spent working directly with employees.

A Close-Up Look at Five Days of Intensive On-the-Job Learning
Out of the internship's eight days, interns spend Days 2 through 6 working inside their assigned teams. (Day 1 focused on guidance – learning about Sumitomo Corporation Group's Corporate Mission Statement and corporate values. Days 7 and 8 brought all interns together for final presentations.)
Below is the full five-day schedule for the Retail Data Science team. The program covered a wide range of experiences, from a Hands-on Data Science Exercise and meetings to store visits and conversations with employees. In the sections that follow, we present the highlights in digest form. (Not necessarily in chronological order.)
The Retail SBU operates several lifestyle-related businesses, including Summit, a supermarket chain in the Tokyo metropolitan area, and FujiMart, a supermarket business in Vietnam, alongside FEILER and Sumisho Montblanc, brands specializing in lifestyle goods and uniforms. Therein, the Retail Business Data Marketing Unit works closely with LXIO, a Group company specializing in retail data analysis, to support more advanced store operations and marketing through the use of purchasing data. Leveraging AI and statistical methods, the team tackles initiatives such as sales forecasting, impact measurement and value creation through new data-driven insights.

Hands-on Data Science Exercise : Combining Field Insights and Analytical Thinking
The core of this internship, the Hands-on Data Science Exercise, centered around two tasks.
Task 1: Interns work to predict daily category-level sales at the prepared foods section of the Summit Store Kanda Square. Using a programming model developed by employees, they selected variables likely to influence sales, such as historical purchase data and weather, and trained the model, checking performance against sales data and refining their approach.
Task 2: Building on what they learned in Task 1 and during store visits, interns conducted their own additional analysis and developed recommendations to improve store sales.
On the first day of the exercises, employees encouraged the interns: "We want you to experience firsthand how your hypotheses affect results by running real programs. Through store visits and conversations with employees, we hope you'll learn to blend field insight with data analysis." The three interns discussed their objectives – Who is this prediction for? What decisions will it support? – and divided roles as they moved forward with their work.
Refining Proposals Through Fieldwork and Feedback
To sharpen their hypotheses and recommendations, interns visited Summit Store Kanda Square and competitor supermarkets, observing product displays, time-of-day variations and differences across stores while asking employees questions.
The team also received advice from Akito Mori, the CINO (Chief Innovation Officer) of Insight Edge – the company that specializes in DX technologies and engineering in the Sumitomo Corporation Group – and other members outside the team. "Data looks different depending on your vantage point. As Sumitomo Corporation employees, always think about how analysis relates to real impact on business," stated Mori.
Turning Five Days of Learning Into Final Proposals
At the final presentation, many employees with deep business frontline knowledge including Junpei Yamamoto, the General Manager of the Retail SBU, joined in to listen carefully and ask thoughtful questions. Despite their nerves, the interns made confident presentations on methods to increase store sales. Yamamoto commented: "In such a short period, your sharp observations and repeated cycles of thinking were impressive. The real appeal of an integrated trading and business investment company lies in combining data, field insights and many other elements to create new value. If even a little of that excitement came across, I'd be delighted."
Joining Real Meetings Both Internally and With External Partners
Interns also sat in on a number of actual meetings, both internal and external, getting a feel for the negotiations and coordination that drives business forward, though some nervousness was visible on their faces. They participated in the AI x Business Design Capability training session, open to the entire Lifestyle Business Group, joining more than 100 participants online and in person in lively discussion and workshops, with the interns listening intently throughout.
Connecting With Employees for a Deeper Understanding of Sumitomo Corporation and its Work Culture
Throughout the internship, interns interacted with a wide range of employees, through business briefings from each unit, lunchtime discussions and informal conversations. As their understanding of Sumitomo Corporation's business grew, their questions became more wide-ranging, prompting deeper discussions from employees. This close, approachable atmosphere is unique to a hands-on, work-immersive internship. At the young employee roundtable, topics ranged from overseas assignments and English skills to everyday work style, sparking lively conversation.
After Business Frontline Training, We Asked Interns Their Thoughts:
What Does it Mean To Work at Sumitomo Corporation?

"The internship flew by. Every day felt like thinking at full speed. I was especially struck by how the data analysis tasks deepened my understanding of how data is used in retail. I realized just how important it is to combine data analysis with real frontline business insights. Speaking directly with so many employees also helped me grasp the diversity of Sumitomo Corporation's businesses and work styles."

"Through many conversations, I came to appreciate that while businesses within Sumitomo Corporation differ greatly depending on their products and business models, the company’s overall mission and direction remain consistent. Many of my initial questions about the retail business were resolved through conversations with employees and I came away with a clearer personal understanding of it."

"I was surprised by how close employees felt. Even senior leaders, including the GM of the SBU, engaged with us as equals, which left a lasting impression. Joining real meetings gave me an invaluable sense of the tension and pace of actual business, while seeing how professionals produce results within a limited time made a strong impression on me."
The Retail Data Science Team also shared their reflections: "This was our first time hosting interns, so we started from scratch. We worked together as a team to figure out what the interns might expect and how to clearly communicate our work, building the program through trial and error. We also prepared opportunities to give them a real sense of what it means to work at Sumitomo Corporation. For the practical assignment, we thought a more hands-on challenge using AI would be beneficial, though honestly, it might have been a bit too demanding. Nonetheless, all three interns tackled it with tremendous enthusiasm and delivered results that exceeded our expectations. We hope this internship sparked new discoveries and insights for them, enriching both their future job search and their student life."
The hands-on internship provided meaningful learning not only for the interns, but also for the employees, and even the Enriching+ editorial team member who accompanied them. We hope the experiences and connections formed in Sumitomo Corporation's workplace help broaden each participant's future career possibilities and inspire their next steps.
