Recreating an Employee Visit! What Job Seekers Want to Know: Building Global Careers at Sumitomo Corporation

Employee visits are a great opportunity for prospective employees to hear firsthand accounts from people working at the companies they're considering. Many job seekers wonder what kinds of questions are typically asked during these visits. Today, a 2025 new hire (as someone closest to the current cohort of job seekers) sits down with a senior colleague to recreate an employee visit and give readers a real-life look at the experience. Natsumi Okamoto – a newcomer just over five months into the company – speaks with Nozomi Oyama, a seasoned employee who has taken maternity and childcare leave, about global work opportunities and career development at Sumitomo Corporation.
This article is the second half of a two-part series.
Note: At Sumitomo Corporation, "OGOB" visits are referred to as "employee visits." Guidelines for conducting these visits, including rules for responding, are available on the corporate website under "Employee Visit Implementation Guidelines."

What Job Seekers Want to Know: Why Choose Sumitomo Corporation Among Many Integrated Trading Companies?

Okamoto (recent job seeker)Thank you for your time today. To begin, when you were job hunting, did you apply to other integrated trading companies? Why did you end up choosing Sumitomo Corporation?
OyamaI didn't apply to every integrated trading company, but I did have employee visits and interviews at several. Among them, Sumitomo Corporation stood out for its people. During my visit, even if the person I contacted to meet wasn't available, he thoughtfully introduced me to someone else who would be a good fit for my situation. The employee sincerely accommodated me from a job-hunting student's perspective, which left a lasting impression.
Sumitomo Corporation also has the " Instructor System" that facilitates close communication between new employees and senior staff. I served as an instructor myself two years ago, and since my mentee was more than a decade younger, I felt almost like a mother, talking with her every day to support her growth. We still work together, and seeing her progress makes me very happy.

What Job Seekers Want to Know: What's It Like to Be Posted Overseas? How Do You Balance Career and Life Events?
OkamotoYou've had an overseas assignment in China. Did you always want to work abroad, even as a student?
OyamaThe first time I thought seriously about working overseas was when I did a one-year homestay in Australia in high school. Living there surrounded by people with completely different views and values was one culture shock after another, but it was also incredibly stimulating.
OkamotoWhile on assignment overseas, did you experience language or cultural gaps?
OyamaAs a language trainee dispatched by the company to study Chinese, mastering the language was a major responsibility. Since I barely spoke any Chinese at first, the hurdle was high. I spent my first year at Chinese-language schools alongside students from many countries. The following year I was scheduled to start at the Sumitomo Corporation (China), so I constantly felt the pressure: "I must master practical Chinese to support our business!"
At the local company, all interactions with business partners were in Chinese. Building on the basics I learned in schools, the environment offered a more hands-on experience. I learned from my supervisors, my colleagues and business partners, and I kept taking private lessons before work. When I finally reached the point where I could understand meetings and speak up myself, it gave me tremendous confidence.

It was a very fulfilling three years. Having the overseas assignment before giving birth and raising children was greatly beneficial to my current career. How about you, Ms. Okamoto – would you like to work overseas?
OkamotoIt's a rare opportunity, so if given the chance, I'd love to go!
What Job Seekers Want to Know: Can You Really Balance Career and Life Events?
OkamotoYou've experienced great changes in life like marriage and childbirth. What do you do to balance your career and private life?

OyamaWhen I was job hunting and in my first years at the company, I didn't have any particular plans for marriage or children. But now having had these experiences, I've realized how important it is to focus on growth and become independent early in your career. It's not only pregnancy, childbirth or child-rearing – some people also must care for family members, and anyone can face a health issue. Everyone has the potential for a temporary slowdown at some point in their career. If you've grown as much as you can early on, it's much easier to catch up after a break. Having a mindset of self-management from your first year can help.
I also prioritize close communication both at work and home. When raising children, I've often needed to step away from work for several hours due to parent-teacher meetings, individual consultations or observation days for daycare, elementary school and after-school programs. Naturally I had to manage these responsibilities without impacting tasks assigned to me on the business side, and I always proactively shared my schedule with team members so they could understand my situation. There are plenty of times when others have covered for me, including during sudden illness, and I try to spot and adjust early when someone else might be in a pinch. Building mutually supportive relationships with gratitude and respect is crucial.
OkamotoI used to think working women faced so many hurdles, but hearing you speak makes me realize it's possible to keep both work and family with the right approach.
What Job Seekers Want to Know: Experiencing Sumitomo Corporation's Business Philosophy
OkamotoFinally, looking back on your career, are there moments when you've truly felt Sumitomo’s business philosophy?
OyamaI've often received comments like, "I'm entrusting this work to you because you're with Sumitomo Corporation," or "We're doing this because we trust your company." Each time, I felt the weight of Sumitomo Corporation's core principles of "integrity and sound management" established by our predecessors.
Recently as part of my new business development work, a company overseas that we've done business with for about 20 years reached out to say, "We'd like to work with Sumitomo Corporation again." Power projects – from building plants to operating them – span decades and involve many stakeholders over the long term. Because we have consistently engaged with partners sincerely in line with the spirit of "integrity and sound management," we're able to develop new businesses and expand our operations both in Japan and overseas. Being regarded as a good partner is the greatest honor.
OkamotoI now understand how this company has built up trust over a long history. I hope I can continue building that foundation myself. Thank you very much for sharing your experiences!
