Building a Bright Future: How Two SCOA Companies Are Expanding for the Next Era of Construction Equipment
Across SCOA’s Construction Equipment portfolio, growth is being pursued through initiatives designed to strengthen capabilities, deepen relationships, and support long-term competitiveness. Two recent developments—SMS Equipment’s European expansion and Sunstate Equipment’s acquisition of JTB Rentals—highlight how this strategy is taking shape across global and regional markets.
Advancing Global Mining and Construction Capabilities with SMS Equipment
SMS Equipment, a SCOA Group company, has brought Finland’s Suomen Rakennuskone Oy (SRO) under its umbrella and expanded its business domain into Europe.
“SMS Equipment, the world’s largest independent Komatsu mining and construction equipment dealer, with a proven track record serving top tier global mining customers, continues to deliver high value services not only across Canada but also in Mongolia and the United States (Alaska),” said Ichiro Murofushi, Managing Director and General Manager of the Construction and Transportation Systems Division. “SMS Equipment, in collaboration with SRO will deploy its best-in-class mining and construction solution capabilities and strengthen the overall business foundation. Finland’s resilient and growing mining market will benefit from SMS Equipment’s scale, technical depth, and operational expertise.”

“The acquisition of SRO represents an important milestone in our international growth,” said Robin Heard, President and CEO of SMS Equipment. “Through the expansion, we’re able to extend our depth of expertise developed in global mining and construction segments, and work with SRO to further develop these industries in Finland. Together, we will evolve our global capabilities and strengthen the value we deliver to all our customers.”
Jared Collins, Managing Director of Suomen Rakennuskone Oy, stated, “SMS Equipment’s expertise and best practices have been delivered and proven in some of the world’s most demanding heavy equipment environments. With this acquisition, we’re combining this global experience with Suomen Rakennuskone Oy’s deep local knowledge and longstanding customer relationships.”
“SMS Equipment will be able to provide its global subsidiaries with world-class experience in areas such as component remanufacturing, deployment of Autonomous Haulage Systems, digital technologies and service delivery for mining equipment operating in remote regions, while enhancing top-tier service standards, safety practices, and training programs,” Murofushi stated. “At the same time, local professional teams will maintain strong customer relationships rooted in deep regional market knowledge, further enhancing our brand equity. In practical terms, this means sharing technical playbooks, developing plans for fleet lifecycle solutions, and making targeted investments, while sharing best practices across organizations.”
“SMS Equipment will further grow by providing best-in-class mining and construction equipment solutions globally, specifically, it will (1) codify and horizontally deploy service methodologies; (2) incubate new business domains; (3) enhance digital and analytics driven management; and (4) strengthen and scale collaborations with OEMs.”
Strengthening Regional Density with Sunstate Equipment
Back in the United States, SCOA Group Company Sunstate Equipment’s acquisition of JTB Rentals adds the Calhoun, Louisiana location to its existing operations in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles.
“At this stage of our growth, we’re very intentional about where and how we expand,” said Michiya Akita, Vice President of Business Development at Sunstate Equipment. “JTB was the right fit because it strengthens density, not just geography in a rapidly accelerating market. With multiple large-scale industrial and energy projects advancing across the state and strong growth projected in manufacturing and data infrastructure, we see sustained demand building through 2026 and beyond.”
“JTB strengthens our position in North-Central Louisiana and along the I-20 corridor at exactly the right time,” said Norty Turner, President and CEO of Sunstate Equipment. “With Baton Rouge and Lake Charles already established, Calhoun creates contiguous coverage across key growth markets and into the Ark-La-Tex region. That density means better fleet availability, shorter transportation cycles, faster response times, and more flexibility for customers whose projects span multiple regions.”

“We’re proud to welcome JTB Rentals to Sunstate,” Turner declared. “This acquisition meaningfully strengthens our ability to serve customers across North-Central Louisiana and the broader Ark-La-Tex region while preserving what matters most—local relationships, trusted service, and the people who deliver it every day. JTB has built a strong reputation rooted in care for customers and community, and we’re excited to build on that foundation together as part of Sunstate’s growing network.”
“Cultural synergy is a critical factor in every acquisition we pursue,” Turner said. “Growth only works when the organizations coming together share common values, a strong work ethic, and a clear commitment to serving customers the right way. JTB’s team has deep roots in Calhoun and the surrounding communities, and those relationships are the foundation of their success. Our role is to invest in that foundation and expand what is possible for their employees and customers.”
Founder of JTB Rentals James Montgomery said, “Joining Sunstate gives our employees new opportunities and our customers the ability to tap into a wider network of fleet options for projects both inside and outside Louisiana. We’re excited to be joining a company that aligns so closely with our values and customer-first mindset. We trust Sunstate with this next chapter of growth for our team, our customers, and our community.”
“As we integrate, Sunstate’s focus is simple,” Turner said. “Preserve trust. Strengthen capabilities. Provide broader fleet access, expanded resources, and operational support that allows the local team to serve customers at an even higher level.”
A Shared Vision for the Future
Taken together, the initiatives at SMS Equipment and Sunstate Equipment reflect a coordinated effort to strengthen Sumitomo Corporation of Americas’ Construction Equipment business through global capability alignment and regional density.
“At the same time, this will provide SMS with a platform to expand its business domains in Europe, enhancing customer value delivery and the Group’s medium to long term competitiveness,” Murofushi said.
“As we remain disciplined, people-focused, and performance-driven, acquisitions like this will strengthen our platform and reinforce Sunstate’s position as the most trusted rental partner in the industry,” Turner stated.
Together, these developments signal strong momentum for SCOA’s Construction Equipment business, with both companies continuing to build their futures in ways designed to deliver long-term value for customers, employees, and partners.
