In the oil sands and open-pit mines of Canada, efficiency is measured the hard way — in tonnes moved, downtime avoided, and whether the machines keep working when conditions need them most. The recent Canadian deployment of Komatsu’s new PC9000-12 hydraulic mining excavator reflects that broader shift. For SMS Equipment, the project represented more than the arrival of another large mining shovel. It was the latest chapter in a long-running operational partnership between SMS Equipment, Komatsu Germany Mining Division (KGM), and mining customers working together to improve how large-scale mines actually function day to day.

“Bringing the first PC9000-12 into Canada was not just about delivering a new machine — it was about connecting the right people with the right expertise and shared vision for the future of mining,” said Dennis Chmielewski, EVP of Mining at SMS Equipment.

The PC9000-12, which KGM introduced globally earlier this year, is the largest hydraulic mining excavator in Komatsu’s portfolio and was designed around a simple reality facing modern mining operations: every pass, every cycle, and every hour of uptime matters when production targets stretch across massive sites operating around the clock.

The Canadian rollout also reflected years of operational collaboration between SMS, Komatsu, and mining customers already working together on earlier large-scale mining technology deployments.

“From the PC9000’s early development through to commissioning the first machines, what stood out most was the partnership between SMS Equipment, Komatsu Germany Mining Division (KGM) and our customer,” Chmielewski said. “It’s a relationship that dates back many years, and the level of collaboration and communication we’ve established over that time influenced every step of this project.”

That collaboration has already included several major mining technology deployments in Canada, including the country’s first Autonomous Haulage System as well as earlier introductions involving the Komatsu 980E haul truck and the Komatsu PC7000 front shovel.

Rather than focusing solely on individual machine specifications, the PC9000-12 launch reflects a broader industry shift toward integrated mining systems in which equipment, automation, operational data, and long-term mine planning are increasingly interconnected.

“A strong focus on reducing overall cost per tonne is shifting mining customers’ priorities,” Chmielewski said. “While still considering incremental improvements, they’re actively planning for system-wide transformation in the medium and long term.”

“That means they’re looking to invest in adaptable systems that can evolve with their operations, improve performance today and support automation and efficiency gains over time.”

The PC9000-12 was specifically designed around many of those evolving operational priorities. The machine is compatible with Komatsu’s FrontRunner Autonomous Haulage System and can be configured with diesel Tier 4, diesel unregulated, or electric drive systems depending on site requirements and operational strategy.

For mining operators, the focus is increasingly shifting from traditional cost control measures toward continuous operational optimization across entire fleets and mining systems.

“Efficiency is also moving from cost control to real-time optimization,” Chmielewski said. “Customers are looking for ways to maximize production, improve uptime, use energy more efficiently and connect data across their fleets and operations to make better decisions.”

According to Chmielewski, the launch of the PC9000-12 reflects a broader transition already underway across surface mining operations.

“Surface mining is shifting toward smarter, more connected operations where every part of the system works together to improve productivity, efficiency and long-term performance while reducing overall cost per tonne,” he said. “The launch of the PC9000-12 reflects a broader shift in surface mining toward optimizing entire operations. SMS Equipment is working in partnership with customers to evaluate how equipment, technology, processes and people all work together to improve the economics of their mine.”

According to Chmielewski, SMS and Komatsu Germany Mining Division began developing a long-term launch strategy far ahead of the machine’s official global introduction.

“Another innovative aspect of the PC9000’s deployment was the unique approach to how the product launch was marketed,” Chmielewski said. “SMS Equipment and KGM developed a coordinated program — two years before the machine’s global release — that steadily shared the story of the machine’s development, the collaboration behind it and the benefits it was designed to deliver.”

The launch campaign incorporated industry media outreach, events, digital content, and the dedicated website PC9000.com to build awareness among mining customers globally.

“The collaboration has set a new standard within the Komatsu network in how they partner with their dealer on marketing,” Chmielewski added.

“From our experience with the PC9000-12, one of the biggest advantages for customers is the versatility it brings to large-scale mining operations,” Chmielewski said. “In demanding environments, every cycle, pass and tonne matters.
